When people think of Bangkok, they often picture neon lights, traffic jams, and crowded streets. While that exists, Bangkok also has several leafy, quiet residential districts that are highly popular with retirees. These neighborhoods offer shaded side streets, quiet public parks, excellent supermarkets, and direct access to the city's top private hospitals. If you are looking to retire in the capital, here are the best areas to consider.

Share this guide:

1. Sala Daeng / Chong Nonsi: Shaded and Central

Sala Daeng (BTS Sala Daeng) and the quiet side-sois of Chong Nonsi offer an exceptional residential experience. The streets here are shaded by mature trees, and the neighborhood is home to Lumpini Park, the city's largest green space, perfect for morning walks or tai chi.

You are also close to Bangkok Christian Hospital and BNH Hospital, two of the most respected private medical facilities in the city. The area is highly walkable, allowing you to walk to restaurants, supermarkets, and public transit easily.

Sala Daeng features an array of upscale bakeries, quiet cafes, and international grocery stores (like Tops Food Hall at Silom Edge). For retirees, this makes daily errands extremely convenient without having to face major traffic.

2. Ekkamai: Leafy and Residential

Ekkamai (BTS Ekkamai) offers a relaxed, neighborhood feel just outside the main commercial center. The side streets are quiet, home to low-rise houses, gardens, and community malls with excellent international supermarkets (like Gateway Ekkamai and Big C).

You have easy access to Samitivej Hospital (Sukhumvit Soi 49) and Sukhumvit Hospital, making medical care extremely convenient. Ekkamai offers spacious condos and townhouses on a mid-range budget, giving you more room to relax.

The neighborhood is also famous for its Japanese community influence. This brings amazing sushi bars, cozy ramen joints, and the 24-hour Don Don Donki mall, which is perfect for buying Japanese imported food and household items.

3. Nonthaburi / Riverside: Quiet and Affordable

For retirees who want a slow-paced, traditional lifestyle, the northern riverside district of Nonthaburi is a fantastic choice. Life here revolves around the Chao Phraya River, canal walks, and local fresh markets, far away from the traffic noise.

Rents here are exceptionally low (often half of Sukhumvit prices), and the MRT Purple Line monorail connects you directly to the center of the city. You also have easy access to modern hospitals like Nonthavej Hospital, offering a highly comfortable, budget-friendly retirement.

Retirees can commute using the Chao Phraya Express Boat, which offers a highly scenic, breeze-filled ride from the Nonthaburi Pier directly to Sathorn or the historic Old City districts for just ฿16 to ฿30 per trip.
